Standard Component Values

Preferred-number series, color and SMD codes, and ceramic capacitor dielectrics. The E12 and E24 lists are the same ones the LC Filter Designer and trimmer picker round to.

E-series preferred values (IEC 60063)

Multiply by any power of ten. E6, E12 and E24 use two significant figures. IEC notes that the E24 values from 27 through 47, and 82, depart from the exact 10n/24 rule for historical reasons. E48 and E96 use three figures and are every fourth and every second value of E192, the rounded 10n/192 series. The tolerance shown with each series is IEC's recommended pairing for resistors. For capacitors IEC notes that E48 and above are not usually used, and ±1% parts use E24 values. Source: IEC 60063:2015, Tables 1 to 3 (iTeh preview; full text from the IEC webstore).

Resistor color code

4-band: digit, digit, multiplier, tolerance. 5-band: three digits, multiplier, tolerance. A 6th band, used only with three-digit values, is the temperature coefficient (TCR). Band 1 is the one nearest the end, and the tolerance band is drawn at least 1.5 times wider. Source: IEC 60062:2016+AMD1:2019, Table 1 (iTeh preview).

Example: yellow violet red gold is 4, 7, ×100, ±5% = 4.7 kΩ. Brown black black red brown is 1, 0, 0, ×100, ±1% = 10.0 kΩ.

Pink ×0.001 is new in the 2016 edition (IEC 60062 foreword), so older charts leave it out. Manufacturer charts differ in places. Vishay VMN-WB0794 shows gray as ±0.05% and gives no tolerance for orange or yellow. The Vishay resistor marking guide lists only six TCR colors (brown, red, yellow, orange, blue, violet), with the same values as IEC. When a part's datasheet disagrees, go by the datasheet.

Ceramic capacitor dielectrics

CodeClassTemperature rangeChange over rangeNotes
C0G (NP0)1−55 to +125 °C0 ±30 ppm/KParaelectric (CaZrO3). KEMET lists DC bias loss and aging only for Class 2 and 3.
U2J (N750)1−55 to +85 °C−750 ±120 ppm/KParaelectric, like C0G, with a negative temperature coefficient. Range from Murata GRM033: −55 to +85 °C, operating to +125 °C.
X7R2−55 to +125 °C±15%Ferroelectric (BaTiO3). Capacitance drops with DC bias, and it ages (KEMET limit 1.5% per decade hour).
X5R2−55 to +85 °C±15%Ferroelectric, like X7R. Capacitance drops with DC bias.
Y5V3−30 to +85 °C+22% / −82%Class 3: the largest allowed change of these five.

EIA-198 codes. Class 1: the first letter is the significant figure, the digit is the multiplier and the last letter is the tolerance, so U2J = 7.5 × −100 ±120 ppm/K. Class 2 and 3: the first letter is the low temperature, the digit is the high temperature and the last letter is the maximum change. Sources: KEMET, Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs), PSMA 2017 (EIA-198 tables), the Murata GRM033 datasheet (C0G, U2J, X7R and X5R limits, and the U2J range), and KEMET ceramic chip capacitors (C0G = NP0, and the X5R limits). Y5V is decoded from the EIA-198 tables.
